Business Meeting Minutes
October 1, 2005


A) Election of Moderator:
The group voted to have Denis Culley presiding as Moderator for the meeting. Denis explained the Maine Moderators rules (similar to Robert’s rules) and other procedural rules (such as standing when speaking and no private conversations etc.) for conducting the meeting and we agreed to abide by them.

B) Bylaws Changes:
Past President David Haines explained the major Bylaw changes (They can be viewed on the website):
  1. Our name has changed from Maine School of Science and Mathematics Parents Group (MSSMPG) to Maine School of Science and Mathematics Parents Association (MSSMPA). This was done to help show that we are a New organization with new bylaws.

  2. Our mission statement changes:
    • The addition that we are supporting the school’s mission
    • The addition that we will "Work collaboratively with the School and the MSSM Foundation to increase financial support for the school through fundraising efforts."
    • The addition that we will "Assist in the admissions process by identifying and recruiting qualified student applicants, and when appropriate attending and/or hosting admissions open houses for prospective students and their families.

  3. Other changes:
    • Inviting the executive director to attend all meetings
    • Adding the Office of secretary
C) Election of Officers:
    - nomination of committee slate were introduced
    - nominations from the floor were introduced
    - elections held and results:
    President - Sylvia Lowry
    Vice President - Dale Gordon
    Treasurer - David Zellinger
    Secretary - Jane Yurko
    Communications/Publicity - Stew and Midge Vreeland
    Student Life/Enrichment - Griselda Marquez-Demassey

D) Treasurer’s Report

    Website registration - 25.00
    Nate Gardner Good bye gift - 60.00
    2 donations of $25 each +50.00

    Ending balance $381.54

    Foundation account balance $741.31

Side note/Reminder: You are welcome to contribute toward these at any time. The Foundation Account allows the donor to take a charitable deduction on their taxes since the foundation is a non-profit organization, whereas the MSSMPA account is not tax deductible. E) Setting of next annual meeting was voted to be at next years Parent Weekend.

F) Other: Paul Meyer thanked the out going officers: David Haines president, Dale Gordon vice president, Sylvia Lowry Treasurer, Steven Powell communications/publicity chair and Alice Chartrand Past CoPresident and he was thanked for maintaining the website.
